are you black and believe that all your ancestors came only from some small tribes from africa? I things thats absurd, and culture is a matter not of your color skin but abut how you express your self and what you chose to learn in life, not what your ancestors deed or where, I mean, there is no sense in asuming that because there was certain people in the past who had certain beliefe one should feel forced to agree with those beliefe, is you do so, if you parents where wrong you are cursed to fall in the same pit on and on...
ReplyDeleteHernán what does any of that have to do with this particular post? I am not sure I follow your question fully but, yes, African Americans are descended from "small tribes" and large empires in West and Central Africa. That is a basic fact easily verified.
ReplyDeleteI agree that culture should not be reduced to color (race) but "color" has certainly influenced culture for obvious historical reasons--centuries of racism white-supremacy, the transatlantic slave trade and African responses to those impositions. I share your position that one should not be "forced" to agree with past beliefs. Rather we should take the best our traditions to move forward. We Africans call it Sankofa. GI
